Before Akropolis became the internationally acclaimed, award-winning music ensemble Akropolis Reed Quintet, they were colleagues of mine at the University of Michigan and asked me to design their first CD album, now available in all the usual musical places.
I had full creative reign for the concept and visual design and was fortunate to have really great track names from which to draw inspiration. Modern wind music is all about controlling chaotic energy, which I represented with a space theme throughout the package. Only a modern typeface would do, and only Futura is used.
I designed several options for the wallet interior that maintained monochromatism, but Akropolis wanted to show off the colorful portraits I’d taken of them in a graffiti alley.
The front and back of the trifold insert are continuous designs. I used illustrations and unexpectedly-shaped type areas to break up the space between each track’s information.
Finally, I created a promotional poster that Akropolis signed and sent to contributors of the album, as well as an event poster for the release party that was posted throughout the University of Michigan School of Music, Theater & Dance.
